Louis S. Pogoda, Sr., 90, of Henry Avenue, died Wednesday (4-3-13) at home.
He was born in Gill on May 28, 1922, the son of Louis W. and Stefania (Kozik) Pogoda. Louis attended local schools in Turners Falls and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School, Class of 1938. He continued his education at Bentley College and graduated with an associate's degree in accounting in 1950.
Louis was a U.S. Air Force
veteran serving in World War II
, as a radar instructor with the rank Sergeant.
He was an accountant at several local companies before retiring after 20 years with Pella Products.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church and a member of the St. Stanislaus Society, the Loyal Order of the Moose and American Legion Post 5 of Brattleboro, VT.
Louis loved ballroom dancing and enjoyed ice skating and spending time with his friends, especially when dining out. He also enjoyed playing the piano.
Among his survivors, Louis leaves three sons, Louis S. Jr. and his wife Ruth of Medford, NJ, Robert F. of Greenfield and Jon F. of Bernardston and his companion Cynthia Pepyne; a daughter, Gena Rumbel and her husband Robert of Colchester, CT; two sisters, Alice Wojtkowski of Millers Falls and Amelia Brzozowy of Newington, CT; five grandchildren including triplets, three great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Louis was predeceased by his wife, the former Genevieve Gozeski, on March 14, 2006, and a son, Edward ""Ted"" Pogoda on May 7, 2005. He was also predeceased by five siblings.
Funeral services, all in Turners Falls, will be held Monday (4-8-13) at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 90 Seventh St., with the Rev. Charles J. DiMascola, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 at the funeral home.
