Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Reynolds) Gowdy, 91, of Shelburne, passed away April 1, 2014 at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield, following a brief period of declining health.
She was born Aug. 23, 1922 to Stanley and Maude (Smith) Reynolds of Shelburne. She attended local schools, graduating in 1940 from Arms Academy.
She was married to Harry "Hank" Gowdy in 1941. Until 1946, they lived in Hazardville, CT, where she made many lifelong friends. Following a six-month stay in Florida, they returned to Shelburne.
Betty enjoyed animals and had a menagerie which included chickens, ducks, geese, swans, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils and guinea hens, just to name a few. She enjoyed buying and selling chickens and ducks and always seemed to have some new critter to show people who visited. Her favorites were always her dogs, horses and ponies. Over the years, many children enjoyed pony rides at "Grandma Gowdys" and remember the animals she was always happy to show them. Betty also enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, and doing word-find puzzles.
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Wheeler and husband John of Shelburne; a son, Harold Gowdy and wife Anita of Asheboro, NC. She leaves 5 grandchildren: Julie (Wheeler) Dubreuil and husband Todd of Shelburne, Jill Wheeler and husband Jeff Janicke of Washington, D.C., H. William Gowdy, Jr. of Washington, D.C., Marie (Gowdy) Mercier and husband Derek of Mint Hill, NC, and Laura (Gowdy) Lynde and husband Matt of Whitingham, VT. She also leaves 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, and son, Lorin Gowdy.
At her request, there will be no services. Following cremation, her ashes will be buried with those of her husband in the Gowdy family plot in Hazardville, CT
