ORANGE - Phyllis R. (Pratt) Read, 88, formerly of Marjorie Street, died late Monday evening, Jan. 6, 2014, at the Baldwinville Nursing Home in Templeton, surrounded by family.
Born in Orange on July 31, 1925, she was a daughter of Eugene and Lena (Pratt) Pratt and grew up in Orange. They had lived in Warwick for 5 years before moving to Orange.
On Feb. 17, 1951, Phyllis was married to Vernon G. Read and enjoyed over 51 years together until his death on March 8, 2002.
Phyllis had worked as a machine operator at Adell's in Orange during World War II and later worked as a chambermaid at the former Quabbin Motel and as a waitress at the former Northfield Hotel.
Phyllis also had served as a Sunday School Superintendent for seven years at the North New Salem Congregational Church. She also was a longtime member of the Athol Salvation Army.
A loving and caring woman, Phyllis had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She enjoyed crafts, writing poetry and flower gardening, but most of all spending time with her family.
Survivors include her children, Sharon Hatstat of Orange, Brenda Wisnewski and her husband, John, of New Braintree, and Clayton Jennings Sr., and his wife, Georgette, of Orange; grandchildren, Daniel Marble, Terri Marble-Burdett, Natalie Wisnewski, Sean Divoll, Rachel Gauthier, Christopher Divoll, Clayton Jennings Jr., David Jennings and Jeannette Piragis; 17 great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and one niece.
Besides her parents and husband, Phyllis was predeceased by a great- granddaughter, Bethany Marble, and a brother, Robert Pratt.
There are no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held Saturday morning, Jan. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Lt. Elliott Higgins of the Athol Salvation Army officiating.
Interment in South Cemetery, Orange, will be private.
A committal service will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 11 a.m. in South Cemetery, 585 South Main St.
