GREENFIELD - Roger S. Crapo, Jr., 69, of 59 Meridian St., died peacefully at home surrounded by his children on Saturday morning, July 20, 2013, following a period of declining health.
A native of Taunton, he was born on April 4, 1944 to Evelyn (Werner) and Roger S. Crapo, Sr., He was educated in local public schools and graduated from Taunton High School in the Class of 1962. He furthered his education by attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, obtaining a BA in Fine Arts in 1973. Additionally, he received a certificate from UMass in Business Administration and Real Estate Principles. He also received a certificate from Greenfield Community College in Welding.
Roger worked for several years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and later founded, with his late wife, (the former Mary Elizabeth (Chisholm) Crapo) Meridian Associates, a non-profit organization that assisted developmentally delayed adults in achieving independent living.
Roger was a Renaissance man who enjoyed several areas of self-expression including photography, art (using several mediums) and was a self-taught potter. He was a member of the NRA, as well as the East Deerfield Gun Club and formerly of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks, BPOE
#1296 in Greenfield.
He was predeceased by his father, Roger S. Crapo, Sr. in 1984; his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Chisholm in 1986, and by his mother, Evelyn (Werner) Crapo in 2006.
Roger leaves his loving children: Donald A. Crapo and Rebecca J. Crapo of Greenfield and Richard Crapo and his wife Catherine of Lee.
A special acknowledgment is offered to Roger's many caregivers who gave selflessly to him during his illness. They include: Michael Peters, Joyce Burek, Nicole DeGregorio and Lisa Ballard, as well as VNA-Hospice of Hampshire County for their many contributions in caring for Roger during his last days.
In keeping with Roger's interest in simplicity, visiting hours are omitted.
His family will gather for a private life celebration with inurnment to take place following cremation in the Mayflower Hill Cemetery, Taunton.
