BERNARDSTON - Roland "Gabby" H. Gadreault, 94, of 62 Eden Trail Branch, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at home with his family at his side.
A native of Colrain, he was born June 5, 1919, to Harvey and Mabel Gadreault. Roland was a 1937 graduate of Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, he then attended Bay Path Institute in Springfield. After graduation he worked at GE in Schenectady, N.Y.
In January of 1941, Roland was drafted into the U.S. Army "27th Infantry Division" Roland saw combat duty in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Star. Roland was honorably discharged from the Army at the close of World War II in September of 1945.
Roland worked at Millers Falls Tool and then he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, working in both Greenfield and Springfield. He retired from the post office in 1995.
Roland loved hunting and fishing.
He belonged to the VFW
Post 8503, the American Legion Post 81, he was a Life Member of the Greenfield Elks Lodge
1296, the Moose Club
Lodge 997 and the National Rifle Association.
Roland was married to Marion Alasses (deceased) and his survivors are two sons, Gary and daughter-in-law Lorraine of Bernardston and James of Turners Falls, along with five grandchildren.
Final arrangements for Roland are through Eternal Blessings, and a private memorial with family members.
A private celebration of Roland's life will be held at a later date.
