GILL – Ruth F. (Ethier) McHugh, 77, of Vassar Way, died on Friday, Oct. 5, at home, after a six month battle with lung cancer.
She was born in Greenfield in 1934, daughter of the late Bernard T. Ethier and Helen Vassar Ethier.
Ruth was a resident of Gill, Greenfield and Hadley since 1974, and being a career Navy wife, she lived in 10 different states from 1951 to 1974.
She enjoyed cooking, studying her collection of over 200 cookbooks, the Red Sox and collecting as well as using her many dishes and fine china. She was an experienced and well-known hostess to many of her dinners, parties and social functions while in the Navy and at her many homes.
Ruth greatly looked forward to spending every winter in various warm locations with Key West and Hawaii being her very favorite places. She was happy to vacation at these two favorites every year since 1990.
Ruth leaves her husband, Vincent, after their 61 years married together; children, Vincent Jr. of Greenfield and Gill, Thomas and his wife Eileen of Fitzwilliam, NH, Carolyn Abramo and her husband Paul of South Glastonbury, CT; brother, Bernard Ethier Jr. and his wife Judith of Greenfield; grandchildren, Jesse McHugh and his wife Azur of Providence, RI, Walter McHugh of Boston, Julia McHugh of Fitzwilliam, NH, Dominic Abramo and Christopher Abramo of South Glastonbury, CT, and a great-grandson, Miles McHugh of Santa Fe, NM.
There are no calling hours.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of her family.
