COLRAIN - Verne Paul Richardson died at his home in Colrain on Feb. 25, 2014 at age 64.
Known to family as Paul and his colleagues as Verne, Paul was born in Greenfield, MA, to Verne Tyler and Rosemarie (Wolf) Richardson. He grew up on his grandparents farm in Shelburne and attended high school at Arms Academy, graduating in 1967. He married his high school sweetheart, Martha Lively, in 1969.
Paul served his country in Vietnam in the U.S. Army.
He earned his degree in electronics from Springfield Technical Community College in 1980, with his wife and daughters cheering him on from the stands. He enjoyed working as the director of the academic computing lab at Greenfield Community College for almost 30 years. Paul also served as the assistant fire chief in Colrain and as a Red Cross volunteer.
He had a very close relationship with his three daughters and was always involved in their activities, from attending concerts and plays to volunteering for the Mohawk Music Department and driving the bus to their performances. He loved fishing with his brothers and friends, camping with his wife and family, and woodworking in his shop at home. Nothing made him happier than being with and bragging about his four grandsons.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Martha; his daughter Tracy Rogers, her husband Kevin, and their two sons, Alex and Andrew; his daughter, Jennifer Dietz, her husband John, and their two sons, Matty and Brian; and his daughter, Sara Richardson, and her boyfriend Sean Naylar; and his brothers, Roy, Karl and Randy Richardson.
Like Will Rogers, Verne Paul ""never met a man he didn't like"" - and rarely met a person who didn't like him. With a continuously good natured optimism he fought a long, hard battle with esophageal cancer, and was able to beat the odds for three years - a remarkable feat for a remarkable man.
