SUNDERLAND - Walter Bielunis Sr., 91, of 85 Old Amherst Road, died Monday afternoon, March 3, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Amherst, June 8, 1922, the son of John and Ursula (Beuskas) Bielunis. He was educated in Amherst schools and graduated from Amherst High School in 1941.
He later joined the U.S. Navy
, serving in World War II
Walter married Frances Reska and they made their home in Sunderland. She predeceased him in 1997.
In early years, he was a truck driver, later a baker at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He later retired as a mason for Lococo Masonary Supply in 1986. He was a talented carpenter, who built his own home in Sunderland.
He was a member of the Sunderland Fire Dept., Sunderland Police Force, Men's Club and former director of the Franklin County Police Association, South Deerfield Polish- American Citizens Club and Sunderland Volunteer Firemen's Association.
He is survived by two sons, James Bielunis and his wife Sandra of Sunderland and Walter Bielunis Jr. and his wife Mary Ellen of Greenfield; one daughter, Barbara Sutherland of Greenfield; one brother, Adam Bielunis of Hatfield; one sister, Helen (Alice) Dzwonkoski of Amherst; five grandchildren, Jennie Sutherland, David Sutherland Jr., Robert Bielunis, Michelle Bielunis and Karen Martin; one great-grandson, Christopher Martin.
He was predeceased by four brothers, John, Francis, Alec and Joseph Bielunis, and two sisters, Anna Petrola and Mary Sieruta.
Calling hours at the Wrisley Funeral Home chapel in South Deerfield will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. A committal service, with military honors will be Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery.
