WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Wilbert Kaufmann, 93, of West Hartford, died Saturday, Feb. 9, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Florida.
Born in Rosheim, France, he was a French army
veteran of World War II
, and spent five years in a German Prisoner of War camp. Both of his parents, as well as his teenage sister, perished during the holocaust. He arrived in the U.S. in 1948.
Until he retired, he owned the former Meadow Meat Co. in Middletown, CT.
He was an avid bridge player, attaining master status.
He leaves his wife, Elaine (Silverstein) Kaufmann, of West Hartford; a son, Marc Kaufmann, and his wife, Ellen, of Buckland, MA; a grandson, David, of Gardiner, NY, and a granddaughter, Sarah, of Park City, UT.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marlyse (Heymann) Kaufmann, who died in 1972 .
