William B. White(1934 - 2014)

GREENFIELD - Longtime resident of Greenfield, William Barnard ""Bill"" White, 80, passed peacefully into eternal life on Sunday, April 27, 2014, with his loving family by his side. He was born at Franklin County Public Hospital on Jan. 5, 1934, the youngest son of Alma Williams and Rev. Lester P. White.
He lived his early years on the Mount Hermon campus, followed by several years on Long Island and Worcester, where his father was a minister. The family then returned to Mount Hermon where he lived until moving to Sunderland and then finally settling in Greenfield.
He graduated from Mount Hermon School in 1953 and went on to the University of Massachusetts where he received a Bachelor Degree in Sociology. After graduation, he began his lifelong career, under the mentorship of Robert S. Reid, at Wilson's Department Store. He continued Post Graduate studies in finance and was a member of the Western Mass. Credit Bureau. He retired as Vice President after 41 years of employment at Wilson's.
He married the love of his life, Marilyn (Dimon) on Aug. 17, 1958 and they enjoyed 56 wonderful years together.
Besides his wife, he leaves three children: Richard Putnam White (and wife Susan) of Glen Mills, PA, Robert Edwin White (and wife Sandra) of Colrain, MA, and Julia Elizabeth Kimball (and husband Russell) of Greenfield, MA. He also leaves four grandchildren: Meghan White Westerbeck (and husband Matthew), Matthew White, William Kimball and Courtney Kimball. He also leaves his brother, Robert (and wife Joan) of Norfolk, MA. He leaves his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, wife of his late brother, Edwin F. White, of Lovell, Maine. He also leaves three cousins: Harland P. Williams (and wife Iris) of Long Island, NY; Donald Williams (and wife Betty Lou) of ""The Villages"" in Florida and Robert Williams (and wife Linda) of Oregon.
During his years in Greenfield, Bill was a member of the Second Congregational Church for 54 years, where he was a tenor in the choir, was on the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee of the Diaconate and treasurer of the church for many years. Bill loved to sing and sang in both the 2nd Church and Sunderland Church choirs.
He was also an active member of the YMCA and spent many noon lunch breaks running with Jim Allen, Red Sewell and Peter Duffy. He continued to be an active member of the Y's ""Exercise is Medicine"" program, until the day he walked into the nursing home. Bill was president of the YMCA board in 1973, and was active in the Y's Men's Club for many years. He also was a volunteer for the ""Kids and Family"" annual campaign. The Whites were the Y's ""Family of the Year"" in 1970. Bill was honored for his outstanding service to the YMCA in 1981. Additionally, he and his wife Marilyn were honored by the YMCA in 2006-2007 for their volunteer work in the community.
Bill's avocation was photography! He recorded numerous events for Wilson's and meticulously recorded family trips, church events, 20 years of James St. ""Block Parties"", family reunions and gatherings, as well as treasured family portraits. He loved to play golf and to work in his vegetable garden. He was a master ""putterer"" and his numerous projects were done right the first time. Over the years, Bill volunteered in many ways, including for Warm the Children and the Greenfield Public Schools.
Services, in celebration of Bill's life and many gifts, will be observed on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, with services to take place at the Second Congregational Church, 16 Court Square, Greenfield, MA, at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Corey Sanderson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Dennis E. LeBlanc, former pastor and friend of the family. Bill's family will receive guests on Wednesday morning in the parish hall from 9:30 until the time of the services. At the conclusion of the services, a luncheon will take place in the parish hall. Off street parking for those attending the services are available at the McCarthy Funeral Homes located adjacent to the church.
Inurnment services will be private and at the convenience of the family in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, MA. Visiting hours will be observed on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA, from 6 to 8 p.m. Bill's family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted and as an expression of affection a charitable contribution be considered in his memory to: Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Suite 2, Greenfield, MA; the Second Congregational Church, 16 Court Square, Greenfield, MA, or the YMCA in Greenfield, 451 Main St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
