William J. Peloskey(1917 - 2014)

GREENFIELD - William J. Peloskey, 96, of Congress Street died Sunday 8/10/14 at the Buckley Health Care Center in Greenfield.
He was born in West Deerfield on October 16, 1917, the son of Leon P. and Anna (Ardzavich) Peloskey.
He attended local schools in West Deerfield and was a graduate of Deerfield Academy Class of 1936.
He worked as a car salesman for Schick and Company 1937-1938, then transferred to the Swift & Company in Greenfield where he worked as a salesman until he was drafted in the United States Army on March 11, 1941. He then transferred to the United States Air Force and attended Albion College in Michigan where he was in the Pilot Training Program. When that ended, he was transferred to ground forces in the Infantry 27th Division. He served in the South Pacific Theatre of War and fought in Saipan and Okinawa and he also flew into Tokyo to disarm Japanese troops and await occupation troops at the end of World War II.
Bill was honorably discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant.
Upon Bill's return to Greenfield, he went back to Swift and Company and worked his way up to branch manager at the Greenfield branch and manager of the Boston, Springfield and Hartford, CT units, retiring in 1982.
Bill married his beloved wife, the former Eleanor Jarvis, on June 13, 1942. At the time, she was training as a nurse at the Franklin County Hospital.
Bill started the Franklin County Flying Club at the Turners Falls Airport where he was the first president and attained a commercial and instructor's pilot rating. He also started the Civil Air Patrol Program.
Bill was a life member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks and the Moose Club. He started the Greenfield VFW, and was a DAV life member. Bill started the Greenfield Figure Skating Club, where he was a member for 35 years. He and Eleanor were avid square and round dancers and they travelled throughout the United States for national square dance conventions.
Bill enjoyed downhill skiing and figure skating until the age of 85. He was an extremely patriotic, kind and considerate man who was a good friend to all.
Bill was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenfield.
Among his survivors, Bill leaves his daughter, Jan Peloskey-Bullock and her husband Ed of Hamilton, MT, three brothers, Richard Pelosky and his wife Ann of Warwick, RI, Robert Pelosky and his wife Mary Lee of Dennis, MA, and Edwin Pelosky and his wife Lois of Amherst, VA, two grandchildren, Amanda and Eben Sumner, both of Hawaii and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor J. (Jarvis) Peloskey on August 21, 2012, his daughter, Carole ""Cookie"" Sumner in 2008 and his sister, Nellie Kulesa in 2002.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday 8/23/14 at 10:30am at Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli officiating.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
