WHATELY - Yvonne T. Rawls, 87, died at home on Monday (11-11-13) in Whately, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 21, 1926 in Taftville, CT, the daughter of French-Canadian parents, Roderick Ste Marie and RoseAlma (Bessette) Ste Marie, she was one of nine children.
Yvonne graduated top of her class at Plainfield, CT, in 1944. She then became a nurse in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, after completion of secondary schooling in 1947, (the first of her family to do so).
She was married to C.C. Rawls Jr., the love of her life. Together they had six children, three boys and three girls. When C.C. became ill, Yvonne was the sole provider for a family of eight. She worked for the majority of her career at St. Francis Hospital as a Staff Nurse, Head Nurse, then Clinical Evening Supervisor. She completed her nursing career as an R.N. at Cozy Corner Nursing Home in Sunderland. In 1979, she and C.C. moved to Whately, living with her son Lawrence and his family.
She was Grandma/Gram to 14 grandchildren and Meme' to 23 great-grandchildren, around whom family was always gathered, never losing her love of babies, sweets, a good joke and food.
Yvonne is survived by all six children and their spouses: Pat (Rawls) Creagan and her husband Jim, Charlotte (Rawls) Marsh and her husband Bill, Lawrence Rawls, Bud Rawls and his wife Linda (Dux) Rawls, Susan (Rawls) Moussa and R. Gregory Rawls and his wife Mary (Moulder) Rawls; two sisters, Claire Mason of Plainfield, CT, and Lucille Foran and her husband James of N.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, C.C. Rawls; daughter-in-law, Barbara Herrigel Rawls; her parents; her sisters, Agnes, Florence and Jeannette, and her brothers, Henry and Lawrence.
Many thanks for the kindness and support of VNA, Hospice of Cooley Dickinson and her physicians, Dr. A.B. Landry, Jr. of Hartford, CT, and Dr. Barry Poret.
