GREENFIELD - Gertrude ""Jane"" Monohon, 91, of Greenfield, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Poet's Seat Health Care Center in Greenfield.
She was born in New York, N.Y., on June 4, 1922, the daughter of Benjamin C. and Marion (Brown )Loder. She was raised in New Rochelle, NY, and graduated from Drew Seminary for Young Women and received her college degree from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. Following graduation, she was employed in the financial district in NY City for various companies including Moody' Investors Services.
She moved to Ashfield in 1950, where she owned and operated ""Jane's General Store"" in South Ashfield until 1964. Following that she was employed by Hampshire Engineering, Franklin County Public Hospital, Amherst College, Smith College School for Social Work, Mohawk Trail Regional High School Guidance Dept. and Superintendent's Office, and finally Franklin Regional Transit Authority. She lived in Ashfield from 1950 until 1980, Buckland from 1980 until 1984, Northfield from 1984 until 2004 and Greenfield from 2004 until her death.
Jane was always very active in events where she lived, serving on numerous boards and organizations. She was well-known for her sense of humor and her concern and compassion for the people around her. She was an avid puzzle and game player and loved animals.
Jane's zeal and passion for life was evidenced by surviving breast cancer twice and a serious car accident at the age of 73.
Her family gives their gratitude and thanks to the staff at Poet's Seat for the dedication and compassion they showed during the nine years that ""Lady Jane"" lived there.
She is survived by three sons: Paul and his wife Nancy of Ashfield, Stephen and his wife Pattie of Turners Falls and Ben and his wife Shirley of Auburn, NH; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held next Thursday (6-27-13) at the Congregational Church, Main Street in Ashfield at 4 p.m. A reception will follow. Interment will be in the South Ashfield Cemetery at a later date to be determined by the family.
