GREENFIELD - John A. Staiger, 95, died on Thursday (4-10-14) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility.

Born on Dec. 16, 1918 in Leyden, he was the son of George and Minna (Wiemers) Staiger. A 1938 graduate of Greenfield High School, he was a lifelong Greenfield resident.
John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, serving in Belgium, Germany, France and Austria before discharge in 1946.
He was a toolmaker at Millers Falls Tool Co. and sales manager for Sears-Roebuck until his retirement in 1983.
For many years, he was member of the Loyal Order of Moose, as well as the American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards, carpentry, dancing and traveling.
John married the former Virginia Hutchison on Sept. 2, 1939, who predeceased him.
He leaves two sons: Gerald Staiger of Greenfield and Steven Staiger of Dryden, NY; five grandchildren: Christopher, Brandon, Emlie, Todd and Brian, and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother, Frederick Staiger of Kingston, MA, one nephew and four nieces.
The family would like to thank Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility, as well as Hospice of Franklin County, for their compassionate care.
Services will be private and are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., Greenfield.
