BERNARDSTON - Peter E. Fortin, 71, of South Street, died Thursday (7-31-14) at Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer.

He was born in Greenfield on Sept. 5, 1942, the son of Harold J. and Louise B. (Miller) Fortin. He was a graduate of Turners Falls High School.
Peter served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and also aboard the USS Calcaterra, as a surface sonar and electronics technician.
He was an electrical technician for the New England Telephone Co. for over 30 years until his retirement in 1996.
Peter was a member of the Montague Elks Lodge 2521 for 48 years and a member of the Turners Falls Schuetzen Verein for many years.
He enjoyed boating, ""Turkey Shoots"" and ""wintering"" at his home in North Port, FL.
Besides his wife of 48 years, Arlene (Pelis) Fortin, Peter leaves two daughters, Wendy Kendrick and her husband Marty of Turners Falls and Kerry Wyman and her fiance Kevin Momaney of Turners Falls; four grandchildren, Troy Miller, Justin, Jordan and Jocelyn Wyman, and many nieces and nephews.
Peter was predeceased by his three siblings: Harold Fortin, Shirley Whiteman and Carolyn Watrous.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday (8/5) at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, with the Rev. Stanley Aksamit officiating. Burial will follow at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in Greenfield.
A calling hour will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
