GREENFIELD - Richard N. Clapp, 87, died on Tuesday (12-10-13) at home. Born on March 21, 1926 in Keene, NH, he was the son of Lloyd and Emma (Hoelle) Clapp. He was a 1943 graduate of Greenfield High School. He attended both University of Maine at Orono and UMass Amherst.
Richard was member of the ""Greatest Generation"" and a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
Richard married the former Barbara Whellahan on Aug. 31, 1974 in Greenfield.
He was owner of the former L.E. Clapp Inc., a moving and storage business that was started by his grandfather, passed down to Richard's father, and then to Richard.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenfield and was an active member of the YMCA and the Y's Men's Club for many years, until just last year. In his younger years, he was active with the Chamber of Commerce, the Massachusetts Movers' Association, the parents' groups at his children's schools and volunteered at the former Greenfield Animal Shelter.
He enjoyed being outdoors, hiking and biking, and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; six children: Maureen Larabee of Westfield, Cheryl Clapp and her husband Stephen Cawley of Center Conway, NH, Curtis Clapp of Greenfield, Richard Clapp and his wife Becky of Clarksville, MD, Allan Clapp of Shelton, CT, and Allyson Brown and her husband Glenn of Greenfield, and eight grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Martha Clapp of Agawam, and nieces and cousins.
Funeral services for Richard will be on Saturday (12-14-13) at 10 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., Greenfield, followed by burial with military honors in Green River Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Friday evening (12-13-13) from 6 to 8.
