Carolyn J. (Bruffee) Furlong, 84, of Gainesville, FL, formerly of Shelburne Falls, MA, passed away Thanksgiving morning. She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard Bruffee and Helen Baldwin Bruffee; her sister, Nelda F. Bruffee Roehm, and by her grandson, Christopher B. Sirois.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald A. Furlong; daughter, Lisa C. Sirois and her husband Larry; 3 sons, Donald B. Furlong and his wife Ellen, Raymond B. Furlong and his wife Leslie, and Richard B. Furlong and his wife Sara; grandsons, Nicholas J. Sirois and Donald C. Furlong and his wife Lauren; 2 great-grandchildren, Emma Clare and Edmond Furlong, and 3 foster daughters, Constance O'Dell Billiel, Shirley O'Dell Cormier and Barbara O'Dell Ireland of Massachusetts.
Carol attended Becker Junior College in Worcester, MA, where she met her husband and co-founded the Jaycee Spouses Organization in Shelburne Falls.
In 1959 the family moved to St. Petersburg, FL, where she attended Lakewood United Methodist Church, and was involved in PTA, Cub Scouts and the Lakewood High School Band Boosters. She tutored children at Bay Vista Elementary School, managing the Southside Tutoring Program and expanding it to over 50 tutors.
In 2005, the couple became a "puppy raiser" for the Southeastern Guide Dogs, raising three puppies. Upon moving to Gainesville they visited critically ill children at Shands Children's Hospital with their therapy dog, Rusty.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at Trinity United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southeastern Guide Dogs of Palmetto, FL, or the E.T. York Haven Hospice of Gainesville, FL.
