GREENFIELD - Donald J Rooney, 87, of Greenfield passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at home with family members by his bedside after a long battle with cancer.
Donald was born December 6, 1925 in Greenfield MA, the son of William H. and Mary T. (Berard) Rooney.
He graduated from Holy Trinity School in 1939 and Greenfield High School Class of 1943. Donald enlisted in the US Navy, November 20, 1943, serving aboard destroyer escort DE-440 U.S.S. McCoy Reynolds during World War II in the Pacific. He received six battle stars, two of which were for engagement in sinking of two Japanese subs. He also received Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. He was discharged in May of 1946 attaining rank of Yeoman 2nd class.
Donald married Janet E. Darling at Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield, officiated by Rev. Casey on November 26, 1949. One of Don's first jobs was with Kinney Shoes on Main Street at the age of fifteen. When out of the service, he went to work for Hathaway Bakery, Turnbulls, Hillside Dairy, and Montgomery Ward, Sears for ten years and Mathew's Shoes on Main Street in Greenfield. He is best known for his own shoe store, Rooney's Shoes, which he started November 21, 1961 in Turners Falls, retiring in 1987.
Don and his wife Janet traveled for ten years in their motor home and spent time in their home in Florida during the winters. He & Janet were square dancers for forty years. Donald belonged to the VFW Post 417, Greenfield Rod & Gun Club, member of the former Brookside Volunteer Fire Dept., former volunteer member of the Greenfield Moose Club and former member of the American Legion Post 81.
Surviving family members include his wife Janet of 63 years and six children: John Rooney and his wife Carol of Greenfield, David Rooney and his wife Brenda of Turners Falls, Karen Rooney of Greenfield, Thomas Rooney and his wife Terri of Greenfield, Susan Rooney and her life's partner Randy Smith of Turners Falls and Laura Rooney of Turners Falls; grandchildren: Nicole Day and her husband Destin, Kenneth Rooney, Christopher Rooney, Michelle Mattia and her husband Kevin, Larrissa Knox and her husband David, Brian Brostek, Heather, Patrick, Lisa and Katie Rooney and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by a brother William.
Funeral services for Donald will be at Blessed Sacrament Church, 221 Federal Street, Greenfield MA at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013, with Rev. Timothy J. Campoli officiating.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice, 329 Conway Street, Suite 2, Greenfield MA 01301.
