TURNERS FALLS - Donnie E. Herzig, 50, of Seventh Street, died Monday, July 2, 2012, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.
He was born in Greenfield on Dec. 7, 1961, the son of Dennis and Betty Ann (Morgan) Herzig.
He attended local schools in Turners Falls and was a graduate of Franklin County Technical School, Class of 1980. He continued his education by attending GTE Sylvania Technical School in Waltham.
Donnie was employed as a lineman at the Verizon Telephone Co. for 14 years before his retirement in 2009 due to his illness.
He loved Karaoke, playing pool, the New England Patriots, his rocking chairs and his projects around the house including remodeling with the help of his friends. But most of all he loved his family.
Donnie was predeceased by his father, Dennis Herzig.
He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Karen (Durkee) Herzig. He also leaves his "Brat children," Nakita Herzig and her boyfriend, Jason Churches of Merrimac, MA, and Jennie Whitman and her husband Mark of Dorchester, MA; his mother, Betty Ann Herzig of Turners Falls; two brothers, Dennis "Chip" Herzig and his wife Bernice "Butch" of Dracut, MA, and Rodney Herzig and his wife Cynthia of Turners Falls; his mother-in-law, Mary Durkee; his sister- in-law, Sue Dibrindisi and her husband Eric, and his brother-in-law, Bill Durkee, all of Florence MA. Donnie is also survived by many aunts, uncles, a niece and several nephews, and cousins plus many treasured friends.
Services will be held Friday morning, July 6, at 10 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square. Burial will follow at Holy Name of Jesus Cemetery on Thayer Street, South Deerfield.
Calling hours will be Thursday, July 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
