SOUTH DEERFIELD - Edna Louise Johnson Noyes, 93, beloved wife of the late Leslie W. Noyes, Jr., passed away peacefully at home with family and hospice care on Monday, April 14, 2014.
Edna was born March 28, 1921, in Springfield, the daughter of the late Edward Richard and Ebba Marie (Johnson) Johnson. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1938.
During her early years, she lived at 15 Victoria St., Springfield, attending Dry Bridge Elementary, Samuel Bowles, Liberty Street and Van Sickle schools. Her first job was as a mail room clerk at Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company, where she quickly advanced to secretary before leaving to start a family. Edna met Leslie W. Noyes, Jr. at Hampton Beach, NH, while he was on leave from the Navy during World War II. After four years of correspondence, Edna married Les, May 8, 1948 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Springfield.
For over 15 years, Edna lived with her family on Westwood Drive in West Springfield, in a home that her husband built. For the past 41 years she has made her home in South Deerfield. She attended Mittineague Congregational Church, West Springfield, Robbins Memorial Church, Greenfield, and the South Deerfield Congregational Church, serving recently on their Mission Committee. Edna was a member of the Springfield Chapter No. 143, Order of the Eastern Star, and Ahlem Temple No. 84, Daughters of the Nile. For many years, Edna volunteered in the mail room at Franklin County Hospital, Greenfield.
Edna, a member of SARA, Swedish Ancestry Research Association, traveled to Sweden on several occasions to meet relatives and explore her Swedish heritage. She was an active member of the Viking Lodge 756, Vasa Order of America and spoke fondly of her Swedish friends and their many lodge activities.
Ninety-three years young, Edna was adept at keeping in touch with family through Facebook and playing Words with Friends on her iPad. She was an avid reader, wonderful cook, and enjoyed fine meals at new restaurants with her family. In addition, she shared many stories with her wonderful caregivers at Comprehensive Home Care in South Deerfield.
Survivors include her two children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her son, James A., his wife, Susan, and son Tyler of Cranberry Township, PA; grandson, Scott Noyes and wife Andrea of Brookfield; grandson, Brent Noyes, wife, Christina and son, Aidan of Springfield; Grandson, Michael Bocchino, wife, Jennifer, and son, Lucas of Eagan, MN; grandson, Matthew Bocchino, wife, Sarah, and daughter, Emma of Florida; Edna's daughter, Linda, her husband, Dean Crowley, sons, Matthew and James, and daughter, Rosemary of Guilderland, NY; granddaughter, Jennifer and her husband, Michael Raymond of Silver Spring, MD. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Janet Noyes of Newbury, MA.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 17, at South Deerfield Congregational Church at 11 am, followed by burial in Brookside Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, April 16, at the Wrisley Funeral Home, South Deerfield from 6 to 8 p.m.
