GREENFIELD - Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother Elaine L. (Jarvis) Hawkins, 84, of 17 Park Ave., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at the Anne and Donald McGraw Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Fla. She was married to the late Dwight H. Hawkins in 1951, they both resided in Greenfield.
The Guest Book is expired.
She was born in Greenfield, Mass., Jan. 24, 1929, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Herzig) Jarvis. She was a Greenfield High School graduate.
Elaine worked for a former Headmaster of Deerfield Academy, David Pynchon, and his family, as a nanny for many years.
She was a life member of Holy Trinity Church and was active in all aspects including many years in the choir.
Elaine loved gardening, yard work, setting up birdhouses and sharing her home with family and neighbors. She enjoyed giving out treats of lollipops to the children who lived nearby and never forgetting the dog biscuits to neighboring pets. She had taken in many rescue cats throughout her life, providing a loving home. She continued her Mother's recipe for Christmas cookies, baking hundreds of them for family, neighbors and friends. Our holiday traditions will be empty without her.
She leaves her three children: James D. Hawkins and his wife Meg of Shelburne, Donald H. Hawkins and his wife Debbie of Northfield and Jeanne L. (Hawkins) Craig of Punta Vedra Beach, Fla. She has five grandchildren: Serena, Breanne, Rush, Cailee and Eliza, and three great-grandchildren: Sophia, Cody and Mason. She also leaves two brothers, Raymond Jarvis and Spike Jarvis, and a sister, Virginia Miller.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Main Street, Greenfield, Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at 10 a.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in a private ceremony with family at Calvary Cemetery.
The family suggests any donations be made in Elaine's name to the Dakin Animal Center.
