Eleanor Irene (Wonsey) Graves 92 of 317 Wonsey Road, Montague, passed away on Saturday October 12, 2013 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center with her family at her side.
She was born on August 8, 1921 to William H. and Janet A. Wonsey in Montague, MA. She was a lifelong resident of Montague. She was married to Dorrace H. Graves on October 6, 1939. Dorrace predeceased her on November 24, 1974.
Eleanor was educated in local schools, graduating in 1939 from Turners Falls High School. Eleanor was employed at the former Franklin County Public Hospital for 22 years and most enjoyed working in the nursery caring for the newborns. She loved having her children, grandchildren great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren always around.
She enjoyed gardening and crafts, especially knitting. She was an avid Red Sox fan. Eleanor did numerous crossword puzzles daily. In earlier years, she enjoyed sailing with her husband and friends. She and Dorrace traveled throughout the states and Canada. Eleanor was a more than 70 year member of the Grange and was active in all their projects. She was a long standing member of the Lake Pleasant Woman's Club and a 4-H leader for many years.
She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Montague and served in several capacities and was a member of its Ladies Benevolent Society (LBS). She was a former member of the Elm Grove Cemetery Association. Eleanor loved helping all people.
She is survived by three daughters; Elizabeth Stewart and partner Duncan Colter of Ashfield, Barbara Larrivee and husband Leo of Millis, MA, and Dorothy Zellmann of Lake Pleasant. Additionally she leaves 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren and one sister Patricia Stewart of Montague. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to Dorrace, she was predeceased by her parents, her brothers William, Henry, Leonard, Gerald and Frederick and sisters Janet Shack and Carolyn Bailey.
Funeral services and will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday October 17, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, Montague, MA, with Rev. Barbara Turner Delisle, Pastor to officiate.
Committal services will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Montague, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall of the church. Visiting hours will be Wednesday October 16, 2013 from 5-7PM at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA.
