BOURNE, MA - Francis J. Sweeney, formerly of Greenfield, Massachusetts, died peacefully Friday, July 12, 2013 surrounded by his loving wife of 62 years, Catherine (Kate) Sweeney, and several of his eleven living children. He was born on February 8, 1924 in Wareham, Massachusetts. Following his attendance at local schools, Fran graduated from Yale University in 1949. He served in the US Army, Second Lieutenant, as an aircraft pilot, during World War II. Fran and Kate lived in Greenfield from 1956 to 1972 where he owned and operated Greenfield Components, a manufacturing company at the location now occupied by the Hampton Inn.

Francis Sweeney is survived by his wife, Kate, of Pocasset, Massachusetts; eleven children, Michael and his wife Ann, of Greenfield; Patricia and her husband John, of Monument Beach, Massachusetts; Catherine (Kit) Weiland and her husband Bruce, of Plymouth, Massachusetts; Margaret Merrigan and her husband Tom, formerly of Greenfield, now of Falmouth, Massachusetts; John (Jack) and his wife Lori of Medfield, Massachusetts; Christine Hanrahan and her husband Terry of Melbourne, Australia; Peter of Mansfield, Massachusetts; James of Pocasset, Massachusetts; Elizabeth Lederman of Marion, Massachusetts; David and his wife Sophia of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; and Mary Fran Sholds and her husband Peter of Salem, Massachusetts. Fran was pre-deceased by a son Tom who died in 1970. Fran is also survived by thirty-one grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be on Monday from 4 to 7 at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home at 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. A Tuesday funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church at 82 High Street, Wareham. Following the funeral Mass, burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wareham.
