George Alfred Phelps
SPARKS, Nev. - George Alfred Phelps, 86, loving husband, father, brother and grandfather passed away in his home on Sunday, May 4, 2014, from cancer. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his wife, children, family and friends. George was born on Oct. 29, 1927 on Huckle Hill Farm in Bernardston, Mass., to Austin and Florence Phelps.
George was an accomplished violinist at a young age, performing with the local symphony orchestra. After graduating from Northfield High School in Massachusetts, he enlisted in the Navy and studied meteorology. In 1948, upon discharge from the service, he moved to Elko, Nev., where he met his future wife, Rita Elizabeth Zunino. They were joined in marriage Dec. 27, 1950 and were married for 63 years.
George worked for Nevada Bell Telephone Co. for 35 years, starting as a microwave radio repairman and working his way up to plant manager. In 1963 he was promoted, and the family moved to Sparks, Nevada.
He retired at 55 and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, writing his autobiography, taking photos and videos, creating pastels, watercolors and sketches. He and his wife loved to travel and ultimately visited all 50 states. In his 70s, he learned how to use the computer and designed a website (yankee-nevadan.weebly.com) to provide easy access to his autobiography, writings, artwork, photos, naval history and Nevada Bell history.
George loved the color and vastness of Nevada seeking out historical and out-of-the-way locations to photograph and sketch. Weekends and vacations were spent with his family hunting, fishing, hiking and camping at some of his favorite places including Lamoille Canyon, Black Rock Desert, Lehman Creek, Sweetwater and Birch Creek.
George is predeceased by his brothers and sisters-John Phelps, Richard Phelps, Stanley Phelps, Dorothy Russell, Charles Phelps, Frank Phelps, Ruth Phelps and Ray Phelps. Surviving siblings are Betty Bolton and Robert Phelps.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita, three children and two grandchildren-Georgina Kaye Phelps and her son, Jesse; James Anthony Phelps, his wife Christina and daughter, Tianan; and Glen Alexander Phelps. George is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews on both coasts.
