GUILFORD, Vt. - Gilbert A. Johnson, 72, of Weatherhead Hollow Road, Guilford, died Wednesday (11-6-13) morning at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Feb. 26, 1941, the son of Sidney and Hjorois (Olsen) Johnson. Gill received his undergraduate from Dowling College and then his MA in Ed. from Keene State College.
He married the former Rene Bentley Miller on April 6, 1985.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1962.
He was a career veteran of the Nuclear Power Industry, beginning his career at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in N.Y. His career saw him working at several nuclear power facilities including Vermont Yankee in Vernon, Vt. He finished his career working for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
He had a lifelong dedication to education and taught Math at Brattleboro Union High School for a year. He was involved in teaching at all levels in the Nuclear Industry. He also was a devoted teacher of religion and was a current member of the Vernon Union Church.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years Rene, and three sons: Christopher and his wife Mariko of Leavenworth, KS, David of Dallas, TX, and Kirk and his wife Cheryl of Lake Mary, FL. He is also survived by a stepson, Todd Miller and his wife Rose of Pittsfield, NH, and a stepdaughter, Tammie Martin and her husband Tom of Guilford, VT, and his beloved mother-in-law, Mary Lou Bentley of Vernon, Vt.; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service on Friday (11-8-13) at 11 a.m. at Beaver Meadow Cemetery, Leyden, Mass. The Rev. Jeffrey Tibbetts, pastor of the Vernon Union Church, will officiate. Military honors by members of the U.S. Navy will be held.
There are no calling hours.
Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield, MA, is in charge of arrangements.
A reception will follow at the Vernon Union Church after the service.
