TURNERS FALLS - Gloria Joan Burke of 11 Crocker Ave., died peacefully at her home on Jan. 2, 2013.
She was born on Feb. 13, 1931 in Greenfield. Gloria was the daughter of Emile and Jessie (MacLeod) Petrin. She was a 1948 graduate of Greenfield High School, where she was a member of field hockey and basketball teams, a participant in numerous school clubs, and a cheerleader.
She was the wife of Dr. Arthur E. Burke, Jr., whom she was married to on July 7, 1951 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Her husband predeceased her in 2002.
Gloria will be remembered most fondly by her son, Arthur E. Burke III of Turners Falls; her daughter, Leslie Masterson and her husband, Thomas, of Norton. Also, Gloria leaves nieces, Laurie Petrin of West Hartford, CT, Adelaide Petrin of Holyoke, Terri Hofeldt of Omaha, NB, and Lynne Woodman of Concord, NH; nephews, Thomas Petrin of Gill and Scott Burke of Weymouth, and grandson, Matthew Masterson. Finally, she will miss greatly the wonderful companionship of Suzanne Willard, the volunteers at the Franklin Medical Center, and her co-workers at the Hillcrest School voting place.
Gloria was a volunteer at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center from 2002 until recently. Previously, she had served as the president of Turners Falls Women's Club, a member of the Jr. SPCC, the treasurer of the Franklin County Friends of the MSPCC. Also, Gloria was a member of the Country Club of Greenfield for more than 50 years and served, there, as entertainment chairperson for 10 years and president of the Women's Organization.
During the 1960's, she enjoyed starring roles in Montague Little Theatre productions. Also, she worked for many years as a receptionist for her husband and, later, Dr. Jay Brooks. Most notably, however, Gloria was a fabulous wife, mother, friend and companion, who enjoyed cooking, golf, reading and aerobics classes.
There are no calling hours at Gloria's request.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated in remembrance of Gloria at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2012 at noon, with the Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, as the celebrant. Rites of committal and burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Gloria's family requests that flowers be omitted and suggests that a gift in her memory be considered to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Suite 2, Greenfield, MA 01301 or to Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, MA 01376.
