BARRINGTON, N.H. - Gregory Hobart Smead, 67, of Swain Road, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at his residence, after battling lung cancer.

Gregory was born on Feb. 15, 1946 in Greenfield, MA, the son of Forrest and the late Charlotte Smead. He graduated from Greenfield High School, Class of 1964, UMass Amherst with a BS in Civil Engineering.
Greg and Coleen have been residents of Barrington, NH, for 32 years.
He was a 28-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, most recently a Lieutenant Colonel with the 157th USF National Guard at Pease.
He worked for Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA) as a Civil Engineer for 35 years. He was a member of Barrington American Legion and a life member of the NRA.
Gregory loved fishing, boating and just being outdoors; his favorite vacations included the many of the National Parks and numerous trips to Aruba.
Gregory leaves behind his wife and best friend of 43 years, Coleen (Staiger) Smead of Barrington, NH; a daughter, Jennifer (Smead) Surina and son-in-law, Matthew Surina, and grandson, Radik Surina, of Dover, NH; a son, Ryan Smead of Rochester, NH; his father, Forrest Smead of Bernardston, MA; a sister, Norma Hagar of South Deerfield, MA, and her husband Dirk; a sister-in-law, Cindi Staiger of San Jose, CA; a brother-in-law, Terry Staiger of Turners Falls, MA; his nieces, nephews and the many special friends that have helped us through this difficult time. He also leaves behind beloved dog, Brandi, and cat, Lucy.
He was predeceased by his mother, Mother Charlotte (Carpenter) Smead.
