GREENFIELD - James J. "Bucky" O'Brien, Jr., 77, of Davis Street, died Monday (9-9-13) at home. He was born in Providence, RI, on Feb. 16, 1936, the son of James J. Sr. and Rachael (Lowe) O'Brien. He attended Cathedral High School and was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School of Springfield, MA. In his youth, Bucky lived in the "Hungry Hill" section of Springfield.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, who served in Korea.
Bucky was a lifetime member of the Sons of Erin of Westfield, a longtime member of the PGA, and had spent the last 45 years as the head pro and head of golf operations at the Country Club of Greenfield. Bucky was inducted into the Western Mass. Golf Hall of Fame in 2011 and was the guest of honor at the 1987 Western Mass. Tee Party. He received the Connecticut Section PGA Pro of the Year award in 2004. Bucky was finishing his 52nd year as a golf professional.
Among his survivors, he leaves two sons, Kevin P. O'Brien of Feeding Hills, MA, and Daniel T. O'Brien of Harmony, NC; a daughter, Lori D'Angelo of Windsor, CT; a sister, Elizabeth Kenyon of Greenwich, NY; four grandchildren, Alyssa Bowman of Charlotte, NC, Rachael D'Angelo of Windsor, CT, Brendan Sean O'Brien and Peyton Churchill O'Brien of Feeding Hills, MA; his former wife, Maryann G. Burek, and extended family members, Pat and Tom Coffin, Jaime and Stephanie Coffin, Jonathan and Jennifer Coffin, Trish Coffin, and John, Tom, and Jim Greene.
Bucky was predeceased by his longtime companion, Barbara Green; a son-in-law, Donald D'Angelo; a grandson, Michael D'Angelo, and two sisters, Marion Mika and Claire O'Brien.
Funeral services will be held Friday (9-13-13) at 9 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Holy Trinity Church with Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private at the Massachusetts Veterans' Cemetery in Agawam.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
