Greenfield- James M. Varilly, Sr., 83, of Keegan Lane died Sunday 6/23/13 at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in Montague on June 1, 1930, the son of Michael J. and Helena (Sullivan) Varilly. He attended Holy Trinity school and was a graduate of Greenfield High School Class of 1948. Jim continued his education by attending the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Jim was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955. He obtained the rank of Aviation Electrician's First and Chief Mate.
Jim was a salesman for GT E - Sylvania for over 25 years before retiring in 1989. Prior to that, he was a pharmaceutical drug salesman for Pitman-Moore for a period of time.
He was a former communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and a current communicant of Holy Trinity Church.
Jim was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the Greenfield Lodge of Elks, and Thomas's Memorial Golf Club in Turners Falls.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading.
Among his survivors, Jim leaves his wife of 57 years, Patricia A. (Creek) Varilly, two sons, David A. of South Deerfield, and Daniel R. and his fiancé Ann Johnson of Brattleboro, VT, a daughter, Eileen Reardon and her husband Bill of Greenfield, two sisters, Patricia Conte of Greenfield and Ann "Nancy" Podlesney of Riva, MD, seven grandchildren, Thomas O'Sullivan of Greenfield, Adam O'Sullivan of Sunderland, Meaghan Handley and her fiancé Nathan Holloway of Turners Falls, Christopher Varilly and his wife Angela of Turners Falls, Daniel Varilly and his wife Lydia of Greenfield, Taylor Varilly of Millers Falls, Kellie Bishop and her husband Greg of Arkansas. There are also four step-grandchildren Bryan Reardon and his wife Katelyn of Erving, Michael Reardon of Montague, Christina Chapman of Florida and Kim Johnson of Vermont. Jim was also blessed with three great grandchildren, Abbigail Holloway, Andrew and Dylan O'Sullivan, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son James Jr. in 2006.
A memorial Mass will be held Friday 6/28 at 10am at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield with the Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield.
Calling hours will be held Thursday evening from 4-7pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield
