John J. Gilmore Jr (1926 - 2014)

John James Gilmore, Jr. of Greenfield, Mass., passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 13, 2013.
Born on Feb. 1, 1926, he was the son of John J. and Charlotte H. Gilmore. He attended Greenfield schools and graduated from Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH, in 1947 after serving for three years with the United States Navy in World War II. From KUA, he went to Middlebury College in Vermont, where he met his future wife, Helen Reid. In 1951, he graduated from Middlebury with a Bachelor of Arts degree in U.S. History.
John and Helen were married Feb. 2, 1952. They settled in Greenfield, where John joined his father's business, the Gilmore Insurance Agency. He merged with several other insurance agencies over the next decades and retired in 2003. Currently, his son Robert is the treasurer of Gilmore and Farrell Insurance Agency.
John joined the Kiwanis Club of Greenfield in 1952 and was a member for over 55 years. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield where he taught the Youth Forum during the 1960s and Helen was the organist and music director. Together, he and Helen raised four children. The family vacationed in the Adirondacks at Silver Bay, NY, where John took many watercolor classes for several years with Adele Hepbron. His interest in painting continued throughout his life, and he took classes every Monday night for 20 years. He and Helen enjoyed traveling abroad visiting Prague, Paris, Berlin and Italy, where he again took several art classes. He and Helen also enjoyed and spent many summers in Rockport, MA, Portland, ME, and Basin Harbor on Lake Champlain, VT.
On the walls of his home and those of his children's hang paintings of the chapels in Prague, the streets of Montmartre in Paris, the canals in Venice, as well as the lobster boats in Rockport Harbor, Portland Head Light, and views of Lake Champlain.
John was predeceased by Helen, his wife of 59 years, and his daughter, Sarah ""Sally"" Gordon.
He is survived by his three sons: Stuart (Terry) of Maclean, VA, James (Cameron) of Encinitas, CA, and Robert (Amy) of Greenfield, MA; seven grandchildren and his cat Tigger.
Calling hours will be held at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home on Franklin Street in Greenfield, Thursday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church of Greenfield on Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m.
