GREENFIELD - Joseph J. Tonna, 83, died Tuesday (11-12-13) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.

He was born in New York City on Nov. 5, 1930, the son of John and Philomena (Doublet) Tonna. He was then raised in Malta, his family's country of origin. Joseph later attended local schools in New York and was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School. He continued his education at St. John's University, New York University and the Cooper Union School of fine arts and engineering.
Joseph was a designer, art director, animator and film director in New York for many years. He also taught film studies at local colleges and ran a small school for art design in New Jersey.
Joseph was a United States Marine, who served in Korea, Vietnam and Panama with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Among his survivors, Joseph leaves four daughters: Lorian Tonna-Lamuniere of Bernardston, Andrea Segura of New Jersey, Erica Tonna of New Jersey and Adea Wood of Kentucky; a brother, Edgar Tonna of Huntington, Long Island; a sister, Mary DeMasi of Hebron, CT, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Joseph was a great lover of animals and therefore any memorial contributions may be made to local Humane Societies.
