TURNERS FALLS - Joseph W. Douglas, 88, of Morris Avenue, died Friday (2-14-14) at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born in Winthrop, MA, on Feb. 1, 1926.
Joe was a United States Army veteran serving in the Korean War, where he was a tank driver obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was a truck driver for most of his life, working for many different companies including Lake Asphalt for over 30 years and Whitney Trucking for over 20 years.
Joe was an avid Harley-Davidson rider. One of his favorite pastimes was model trains. He also collected double winged model airplanes. He loved animals and especially loved his family.
Among his survivors, Joe leaves three sons, Dennis and his longtime companion Emily Hoyt of Greenfield, Wayne and his wife Doris of Erving and Gary and his wife Jean of Northfield; a daughter, Cynthia Lively and her husband Russ of Turners Falls; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Joe was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, the former Gloria Bacigalupo, on May 24, 2003.
A memorial graveside service will be held Saturday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at Springdale Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
