SUNDERLAND – Lyle Tomlinson, 84, of Plumtree Road passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at the Fisher Home in Amherst.

Lyle was born on March 1, 1928 in Quyon, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late Henry and Sarah (Grey) Tomlinson. He was educated in Canada where he grew up and moved to the Springfield area in 1950.
Mr. Tomlinson worked for many years in a lumber camp and also at a mining company. While in Canada, he was a carpenter with his brother, Ivan. He owned and operated the Square Deal Garage in Springfield for 25 years with his wife, Joan. They also owned Pioneer Valley Apts. in Sunderland for many years. Lyle worked at UMass for 20 years and retired in 1993. After retirement, he worked part time at Steiger's in Hadley, the Sunderland Post Office and at the Mullins Center in Amherst. He was an active member of the South Deerfield and Hatfield Senior Centers. He was also active in the Council on Aging and a member of TRIAD.
Lyle enjoyed raising his poodles and was a talented handyman.
His wife of 55 years, Joan (Harp) Tomlinson, passed away on Aug. 20, 2007.
He leaves a daughter, Susan; his sister, Betty Kurck, and her husband Norman and a brother, Eldon Tomlinson, and his wife Gina and their families, all of Canada, as well as many nieces and nephews and his many dear friends.
He was predeceased by a sister, Grace Hill, and six brothers: Earl, Mervin, Henry, Ivan, Kenneth and Edwin Tomlinson.
The family would like to thank the Fisher Home and all the staff for caring for Lyle. Also heartfelt thanks to Dr. Paul Baecher, his doctor and friend.
There are no calling hours and all services will be private.

The family has entrusted Lyle's care with the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton.
