NORTHFIELD - Martin G. Fritz, 90 , of Captain Beers Plain Road, died Tuesday (2-12-13) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.
He was born in Greenfield on May 22, 1922, the son of Francis and Catherine (Doyle) Fritz. Martin attended Holy Trinity School and Greenfield High School.
He had lived in Greenfield prior to purchasing his farm in Northfield in 1951, where he was a self-employed farmer having owned My Valley Farm for over 40 years.
Martin was a World War II, U.S. Navy veteran attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He was decorated with 13 battle stars: 10 Pacific, 2 Philippine Islands and 1 Europe-Casablanca - North Africa.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, the Northfield VFW, the American Legion in Greenfield and the USS Massachusetts Associates. Martin enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.
Martin leaves his wife, the former Sophie Klepacki of 65 years; three daughters, Geraldine Ahearn and her husband Richard of Greenfield, Elizabeth Fritz of Northfield and Mary Ellen Devito and her husband Joseph of White Creek, NY; one brother, Bernard Fritz of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Anna Kelly of Florida; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday (2-19-13) at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 84 K St., with the Rev. Charles J. DiMascola, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday (2-18-13) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
