GREENFIELD - Norman G. Matthews, 89, of Greenfield passed away at Baystate Franklin Medical Center on Thursday (10-10-13).

Born on October 17, 1923 in Claremont, NH, he was the son of Ora and Elsie (Shute) Matthews.
He was a 1942 graduate of Greenfield (MA) High School. Norman married the former Gertrude Pierce on October 4, 1958, celebrating 45 years of marriage before her death in 2004.
Norman was an inspection foreman at the former Greenfield Tap and Die for 45 years, until his retirement. He was a 60-year member of the Greenfield Grange, and Master of Ct. Valley Pomona. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, sports enthusiast and musician. Norman loved visiting with friends, especially spending time with ""the Gang"", a close-knit group of friends.
Survivors include his brother, Donald W. Matthews of Vernon, CT; his nieces Sheila Manke of Wakefield, R.I. and Janice Albetski, of Melrose, CT; as well as his cousin Roland Shute of Greenfield.
A memorial service for Norman will be held on Saturday (10-19-13) at 10:00 a.m. at the Robbins Memorial Congregational Church, officiated by Rev. Deborah Cory, with burial following in Green River Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Elm Terrace Residents' Fund, or Robbins Memorial.
