CONWAY - Robert F. Jamrog of Conway, Mass., died unexpectedly on Feb. 4, 2014. He was 79 years old.
The Guest Book is expired.
Robert, known as ""Bob"" or ""Bobby"" to his family and friends, was born on May 9, 1934 in Springfield, MA; he grew up in the Sandy Hill section of Chicopee. He left the area to attend Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT, and graduated in 1957. He then served in the Armed Forces, and was stationed in Germany.
Travelling in Europe during that time, he fell in love with the continent, and enjoyed telling stories of his travels. When Bob returned to the States, he taught high school English at Narragansett Regional High School in Baldwinville, MA, and Northfield Mount Hermon, Mount Hermon, MA. He also continued his own studies at Boston College. Bob followed a broad career path during his lifetime, and at its end, retired from the Easthampton Dye Works in 1999.
Bob married Patricia Anne Pelland on July 4, 1970. Shortly after their marriage, they purchased 40 acres of land in Conway, MA, where Bob proceeded to build a house for his young family. The project became a gathering spot for extended family members and numerous friends, who made the trek ""up to Conway"" to help out, hang out, and enjoy some time away from suburbia.
Bob was a voracious reader who also wrote extensively about spiritual and philosophical matters. When he was not reading or writing, he usually could be found outside; he held a deep appreciation for the natural world, and spent countless hours hiking through the woods that surrounded his home, working in his garden, and as a younger man, cutting cords and cords of wood.
He was a past member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, and enjoyed canoeing, skiing, and tennis. In later years, one of his favorite past-times was hopping in the car with his wife and taking a day trip to nearby Vermont or New Hampshire.
Among his greatest joys in life were his granddaughters, Piper and Penley. The best advice he passed on to them was to be ""kind, gentle, and friendly."" A devout man, Bob believed in what he referred to as ""the laws of Nature and of Nature's God.""
Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia Anne (Pelland) Jamrog; a daughter, Jessica (Jamrog) Day of Greenfield, MA, her husband Todd Day, and their daughters; a son, Kris Jamrog of Conway, MA, and his wife, Gretchen McPherson; two brothers: John F. Jamrog of Chicopee, MA, and Theodore A. Jamrog, also of Chicopee; a sister, Theodora (Jamrog) Roy of Holyoke, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
