GREENFIELD - Sara Lu (Dole) Plugge, 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, after a courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy at the home of her daughter, Joyce Blanker, and her family in Greenfield.
Sara Lu was born in Greenfield on Jan. 24, 1934, to the late Fred Belding Dole and Hazel Nims Dole of Shelburne. She earned her RN degree from the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing in 1956.
She was married to Harold ""Hal"" Plugge Jr. in August 1956. They were married for 37 years and raised their family in Springfield, Wilbraham and Pocasset.
Sara Lu worked as a nurse in various positions over the years and owned a retail clothing store, the Cover-Up, at the Eastfield Mall.
She was a devoted wife and caregiver to Hal prior to his death in 1993.
Sara Lu was an avid reader and over the years enjoyed playing cards, crocheting award-winning afghans,and making jams for friends and family.
She leaves to cherish her memory her four children: Joyce (and Alan) Blanker of Greenfield, Robert Plugge of Flagler Beach, FL, Gayle Poggi of Edgartown, Russell (and Cara) Plugge of Marietta, GA, and her loving companion of many years, Douglas Robinson of Greenfield. She also leaves her nine grandchildren: Tara (and Todd) Regan, Samantha and Ryan Plugge, Alaina and Diane Blanker, Taylor and Sara Poggi and Luke and Cole Plugge; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Ted Cromack, Cynthia Redeker, Dr. Arvel Steece, Barbara and Jay Chapin; her former daughter-in-law, Tracy Plugge, and son-in-law, David Poggi Jr. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Hal, she was predeceased by her sisters Fredrica Canedy and Kathleen Steece, and her brothers-in-law, Jerry Redeker and Charles Canedy.
Services will be Friday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield.
Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.
