SUNDERLAND - Mary A. Hancock, 97, former resident of Shelburne Falls, passed away Wednesday Jan. 29, 2014, at the New England Health Care Center.
Mary was born on Nov. 18, 1916 in Jacksonville, VT, the daughter of Frank R. and Christine (Brigham) Hancock. She was a graduate of the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, Class of 1935, and the Bliss Business School, Class of 1936.
Mary was a secretary at Lamson & Goodnow Cutlery for 35 years.
She was a member of Trinity Church for many years and taught Sunday school at one time. She was a member of the Shelburne Falls Women's Club and years ago was involved in the yearly planting of flowers on the Bridge of Flowers, a member of the Shelburne Historical Society and had been a contributor to the Arms Academy room at the Shelburne Museum and the project to put a new roof on Arms Library in Shelburne Falls.
At home, Mary enjoyed needlework, gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. She was an avid Red Sox fan, but most of all she enjoyed being with her family.
Among her survivors, Mary leaves two cousins, Roberta Ainsworth of Shelburne Falls and John Brigham of Florida; several second cousins including those locally: Joanne Wells, Joyce Griswold, Nancy Bellows, Beth Clark and Pam Miner.
Services and burial will take place later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelburne Historical Society, P.O. Box 86, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370 or towards the campaign to "Put a Roof on It", the restoration of the roof of Arms Library, 60 Bridge St., Shelburne Falls or online at:
