Samuel J. Chickering, Jr., 78, of South Deerfield, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 18, 2014, at Baystate Franklin Medical Hospital in Greenfield.
He was born in Keene, N.H, the son of the late Samuel J. Chickering, Sr. and Alice (Herrick) Chickering of Westmoreland, N.H. He was devoted to his family and loved his cattle.
Sam moved to South Deerfield in 1970 and founded the Indian Acres herd. He raised registered Holstein and Guernsey cattle. In 2007, one of his homebred cows owned by his granddaughter Ashley, was named the Supreme Champion Cow at the two largest dairy events in the world and she was named the International Cow of the Year. This cow and her offspring still reside on the South Deerfield farm and will continued to be developed through the coming years.  He also enjoyed driving horses and raising Boston Terriers.
Surviving are his wife, Joan (Van Petersilge) Chickering of South Deerfield; his daughter, Carrie N. Chickering-Sears and her husband David of South Deerfield, and granddaughter, Ashley E. Sears of South Deerfield.
There are no formal services at the request of the deceased.
