SHELBURNE FALLS - Janet E. (Payne) Binder, 85, of Water Street, died on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield, where she had been a resident since mid-February.
Born in Northampton, MA, on Sept. 26, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Albert G. and Ethel (Streeter) Payne. Janet attended Northampton High School and was a graduate of Smith Vocational High School, where she excelled at being a seamstress and made it her life's goal to be the best seamstress she could.
On Dec. 2, 1950, she was married to Howard P. Binder. They were married for 51 years until his passing on July 16, 2002.
As a talented seamstress, Janet was able to work from her home providing many people of Shelburne Falls with better fitting clothing. She was a Girl Scout Cookie Mother warehousing Girl Scout Cookies from one end of her house to the other for girls to deliver. She was also a 4-H leader as well. Many people remember Janet helping deliver the afternoon Greenfield Recorder with her two boys around town. In her later years, Janet worked at Amsden's and then the Sawyer News Room, both in Shelburne Falls.
Janet attended Trinity Church and was also a member of the Shelburne Falls Women's Club.
Survivors include her brother, A. Lawrence Payne of Northampton; daughter, Roxanne Hamilton and husband Richard of Brattleboro, VT; sons, Steve Binder and wife Deb of Barnstable, MA, and Richard Binder and wife Carole of Andover, MA. Also, her granddaughter, Christina Goodwin and husband Jonathan of Burlington, VT; grandsons, Nicholas and Matthew Binder of Andover, and one great- grandson, Richard Charles Goodwin.
Janet's three grandchildren all graduated within the past week with various college degrees.
In addition to her parents and husband, Janet was predeceased by a sister, Margaret.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls. Burial services will be private.
