GREENFIELD - Irene "Scrub" M. (Maziarz) Perry, 87, formerly of Canada Hill Road died Wednesday 6/11/14 at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.
She was born in Turners Falls on August 15, 1926, the daughter of John and Catherine (Kozik) Maziarz.Scrub attended local schools in Turners Falls and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School Class of 1945 where she was a cheerleader and won many awards playing basketball. Irene was in the medical records and x-ray departments at the Farren Memorial Hospital for 30 years before her retirement in 1988.
She was a resident of Greenfield for over 60 years and a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church where she was a former Eucharistic Minister, a member of the St. Cecelia's Choir and the Mother of Mary Prayer Group. Scrub was also a CCD teacher at the former St. Mary's Church in Turners Falls and a volunteer at Poet's Seat Nursing Home in Greenfield. In her younger years, Irene was a troop leader for Brownie Troop 69 and Girl Scout Troop 78 for ten years.
She loved sports, especially basketball and the UConn Women Huskies. Scrub was an avid reader and enjoyed rock and mineral hunting and jigsaw puzzles. She was proud of her Polish heritage.
Among her survivors, Irene leaves her daughter Sandra Rose Brodie and her husband Jimmy of Greenfield, her sister in law, Florence Perry of Green Valley, AZ, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter ""McGee"" E. Perry, on February 8, 2010.
A Memorial Mass will be held Monday 6/16 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit officiating. A calling hour will be held at Our Lady of Peace Church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
A graveside memorial service will be Friday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery in Turners Falls with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit officiating.
Sandra Rose and Jimmy ask those attending Irene's service to please wear something red to represent her Polish heritage and her favorite color.
