TURNERS FALLS - In the early morning on Saturday, June 21, 2014, Neil Baker Tompkins, 76, of Turners Falls, passed away surrounded by his loving family at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.
He was born in Springfield, MA, on Nov. 5, 1937, the son of Everett and Grace (Baker) Tompkins. He attended public schools in Turners Falls and was an excellent athlete. He was a graduate of the Class of 1957 and was a lifelong resident of the town. Neil will always be remembered for his positive attitude and having a smile on his face.
Neil proudly served as a 2nd Class communication technician in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961. His last duty assignment was on Midway Island, and he was honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States. He was awarded a Good Conduct Service Medal.
After serving his country, he was a manager in the customer service department at Western Mass Electric Co. in West Springfield for over 30 years until his retirement.
Neil was an avid Turners Falls and New England sports fan. He and his wife, Barbara, loved watching and cheering on his grandchildren playing football, softball, baseball, soccer and basketball. Each and every game one could find him in the stands cheering on the Turners Falls Indians.
He was a member of the Turners Falls Athletic Club and a lifetime member of the Elks and Lions' Club. In his younger years, Neil was active in the Newt Guilbalt Little League in Turners Falls and served as a coach for 12 years.
Besides his beloved wife (54th anniversary on June 18), Barbara (Wyman) Tompkins, Neil leaves two sons, Scott and his wife Sandy of Chicopee and Kyle and his partner Frank Roebuck of Brookline, MA; two daughters, Kelly Markol and her husband Mike and Jodi Ozdarski and her husband Mark, all of Turners Falls; a brother, Carl Tompkins and his wife Judy of Mooresville, NC; two sisters, Jan Burnham of Hilton Head, SC, and Bette Putala and her husband Mike of Jacksonville, FL.; five grandchildren, Haley, Morgan, Brody, Jake and Kayla; a brother-in-law, Jon Wyman and his wife Carol of FL; a sister-in-law, Betty Wyman of Greenfield, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
