NORTHFIELD - Donald L. Thayer, 80, of New Plain Road, died Monday (6-23-14) at the Buckley HealthCare Center in Greenfield. He was born in Ware on Feb. 18, 1934, the son of Leroy and Viola (Moore) Thayer. Donald attended Brookfield and Athol schools and was a graduate of New Salem Academy.

Donald served in the United States Army from 1955-1958.
He was a car knocker for the railroad for 18 years.
Donald loved bingo, and going to Kevin's auction in Brattleboro, Vt. He was known as the Rhubarb Man.
Besides his beloved wife, Ruth Thayer, Donald leaves two sons, Sidney of Northfield and Kevin and his fiance Betty Laboxissonniere of Newport, RI; two daughters, Vicki Livingstone of Northfield and Tammy Stevensand her husband Tim of Phillipston, MA; six grandchildren, Erin, Jason, Eric, Danielle, Katie and Samantha; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Brendan, Nathaniel and Colby; two sisters-in-law, Nellie Williams and Noel Williams, both of Leyden, and a nephew, Timothy Ploof and his wife Pat of Athol.
Donald was predeceased by his sisters, Gertrude Ploof and Ruth Rice.
Funeral services will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
