LEVERETT - Minnie (Descavich) Telega, 96, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Cooley Dickenson Hospital in Northampton.
Born in Sunderland on May 13, 1918, she was the daughter of Charles and Monica (Sinkevicz) Descavich. Minnie graduated from Amherst Regional High School, Class of 1936, and attended Bay Path College.
In her early years, Minnie worked at a hat shop in Holyoke and sewed tobacco in Sunderland.
Minnie was married to Stephen Telega on July 4, 1938 and became a farmer's wife. Her and Stephen together ran a maple sugaring business and grew produce. Minnie employed many local teenagers from the Valley who carried her values and wisdom throughout their lives.
Minnie was an avid gardener and she loved to be outdoors and spend time with her large family.
Survivors include her daughter, June Giannetti and her husband Arthur of Florida; her son, Robert Telega Sr. of Leverett, MA; her son, Theodore Telega Sr. and his wife Mikki of Leverett, MA, and her daughter, Kathleen Goodrich and her husband Ronald of Hatfield, MA.; 13 grandchildren - each one of them her favorite - Steven (Weebe) Giannetti, Jeffrey (Curt) Giannetti, Lisa Dozois, Robert (Duke) Telega, Steven (Steff) Telega, Theodore (Little Ted) Telega, Daniel (Boone) Telega, Joanne (JoJo) Bartucca, Kelly Bowman, William (Burt) Telega, Jennifer Britt, Traci Puckett and Tami K. Goodrich; 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her sister in-law, Peggy Karas of South Deerfield, MA, and her goddaughter/niece, Elizabeth (Betty) Fay of Greenfield, MA.
Minnie was predeceased by her husband, Stephen Telega, in 1999 and her son, William Telega, in 2012.
Calling hours will be Thursday, July 3, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wrisley Funeral Home, South Deerfield, MA. There will be a Panachyda service at 7. Funeral services will be Friday at 9 a.m. with a Parastas service at 10 in the Holy Family Parish, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Ghost Ukranian Cemetery Fund.
