ERVING - Arthur S. Johnson Jr., 85, of Mountain Road, Erving, died Thursday evening (7-3-2014) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield.
He was born in Hanover, N.H., on April 5, 1929, the son of Arthur and Minnie (Barrett) Johnson.
He was educated in Bernardston, Ma. schools and was a graduate of Powers Institute in Bernardston, Ma. He served faithfully in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married the former Ruth Clough on June 2, 1956 in Greenfield. They just recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. He owned and operated Valley Cab. Co. in Greenfield for several years. He was a member of the NRA, and the Orange Rod and Gun Club. He loved hunting, fishing, farming and his dogs.
He was an amazing man and father, spending a great deal of time with his children and grandchildren in teaching them all of life's lessons. He was constantly ""on the go.""
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and children: Russell A. of Greenfield, Ma., David S. and his wife Terri of Orange, Ma., Raymond A. of Erving, Ma., Kenneth L. of Athol, Ma., Doris M. Douglas and her husband Wayne of Erving, Ma., Arthur D. and his wife Maureen of Erving, Ma., Ronald E. and his wife Jennifer of Millers Falls, Ma., and Terry J. and his wife Yvonne of Erving, Ma. 25 grandchildren, and 7 Great-Grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son Tracy J. Johnson.
Funeral Services will be Thursday (7-10-2014) at the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield, Ma. at 1 p.m.
Burial with full military honors, will follow in Central Cemetery, Erving, Ma.
Calling hours will be Thursday morning (7-10-2014) from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral.
