GREENFIELD - Shirley (Rice) Johnson, 95, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2018, after a brief illness.
She was born in Leverett, Mass on September 12, 1922, and was a graduate of Amherst High School 1940, and Bay Path Institute in 1943. She was the wife of the late Elmer Johnson who died in 2008, and the daughter of the late Mildred (Moore) and Julian Rice. She is also predeceased by her three brothers, Arnold M. Rice, Malcolm H Rice, and Paul M Rice.
Shirley was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Springfield, and St Paul's Lutheran Church in Greenfield. Also, a charter member of W Mass Genealogical Society, a member of the Vermont Genealogical Society and Viking Lodge 756 of the Vasa Order of America. After graduating from Bay Path, Shirley worked in Springfield at The Mohican Market, Western Mass Theaters, Casey Electric, Liberty Ice, Jay Lee Foods, ending her working career working for the Federal Census for many years. She loved her Census work the most because she got to meet people from all walks of life. The hardest census was the one about the death of a child. She was proud that 3 generations of her family worked as Census Enumerators. Shirley and Elmer raised their children in Springfield and moved to Greenfield to be close to the children and grandchildren. After Elmer passed away, Shirley joined Viking Lodge of the Vasa Order of America, and the Montague and Greenfield Senior Centers. She enjoyed exercise, bingo, scrabble and most of all Mahjong.
She leaves 2 sons, Philip Johnson and his wife Esther of Erving, and Ronald Johnson and his wife Gale of Hadley, and 3 grandsons, Eric Johnson and his wife Janel of Erving, Karl Johnson of Montague, and Kristian Johnson and his wife Melissa of Athol. She was also blessed with 3 great-granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews.
At Shirley's request, no flowers at the service, please make a memorial donation to St Paul's Lutheran Church or the . A brief service will be held Friday, June 1, 2018 at St Paul's Lutheran Church, 23 Long Ave, Greenfield, at 10 AM, with a viewing at 9:30AM. The internment will be at a later date. The Tazzini Funeral Home was entrusted with her arrangements.
