WHATELY - Sonia Jean Golonka, 64, of 6 State Road, died April 4, 2013 in Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, as a result of a house fire.
She was born in Greenfield, September 9, 1948, the daughter of Bernard J. and Mary A. (Pankievich) Golonka.
Sonia was educated in Shelburne Falls and Whately schools and graduated from Frontier Regional High School in 1967 and later from Northampton Commercial College. She worked as a medical secretary in Worcester and Mass General Hospital in Boston. She came back to Whately to care for her elderly parents and worked at the Golonka Farm Stand.
Sonia enjoyed knitting, shopping and trying new recipes, sometimes modifying them. She liked trying new teas and growing herbs. She had a great basket collection and many trinkets. Sonia loved her customers, the farm and her family.
Survivors include her brothers, Lawrence Golonka and his wife Peggy of Sunderland, MA and James Golonka and his wife Janice of North Hatfield, MA, her sisters, Susan Francis and her husband Jon of Warner Robbins, GA, Marilyn Streciwilk and her husband Stanley of Montague, MA, Barbara St.Germain and her husband Phillip of Turners Falls and Elizabeth Fletcher of South Lake, TX. She also leaves eight nieces and nephews and six grand nieces and nephews. Sonia was predeceased by her father Bernard J. Golonka, Sr. and her brother Bernard J. Golonka, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 9 a.m. from the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church with Fr. Philippe Roux, pastor officiating. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 5-8pm. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in Greenfield. Donations in her memory may be made to the Whately Fire Dept., c/o John Hannum or any surrounding town fire department.
