Alice Helen Bessey Shepard, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, teacher
and friend passed away peacefully on May 9, 2014 from Lewy Body Disease.
Alice was born with a built-in best friend, her twin brother David, on December 31, 1942 in Fresno, California to Jay L. and Helen Riddle Bessey. The escapades of Alice and David, along with their brother Merritt, and sister Barbara live on in family legend. From jumping out of barn windows to timing the electrical fence just right to give their friends a jolt, Mom's stories, told with her theatrical flair, always enthralled her children.
Alice attended elementary through high school in Strathmore, California, involved in many of the activities available. Her tennis skills alone, honed at Strathmore High, were so good she could still beat her teenage son, so long as he didn't do drop shots. Alice graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in 1965 and married a year later.
Alice was a wonderful mother to her six children. She was always ready to take her children on adventures, from getting them involved in show business to camping in the rain at Yosemite. She also loved being home baking the world's best wheat bread and making her home a beautiful, peaceful, welcoming place to so many people.
Alice taught school before her marriage, and later in life. She finished her career at Putnam Elementary School in Porterville, California. She gave her heart to her students, enriching her teaching with music, and an occasional appearance as the Queen of England.
Alice was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved to serve in various capacities from piano playing to visiting teaching. She blessed the lives of all she knew with her wisdom and compassion.
Alice is survived by her children Rebecca Allsworth, Thomas Shepard, Charlotte Heathcote (Fred), Matthew Shepard, Amy Heathcote (Bryan), and Justin Shepard (Katherine); thirteen grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; brother Merritt Bessey (Kathy), brother David Bessey, and sister Barbara Campbell (Jim).
