James Austin Akins was born August 29, 1940 in Washington, D. C. He passed away June 18, 2010 in Porterville.
Jim was a loving and beloved member of Westfield Christian Church and Young Farmers of Porterville.
He was a Pest Control Advisor for Gillespie Ag Chemical Company for many years; Executive Director of ASCS, San Benito and Santa Clara Counties; Manager of Saucelito Irrigation District, Porterville; and farmed milo wheat, cotton, blackeyes, prunes, and walnuts over the years.
Jim served on several water boards, both for SID and Tulare Co. Farm Bureau. He was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International
and, in his younger days, was an avid square dancer.
Jim is survived by his wife Patricia J. Akins (Day); daughters Melissa (Roy) Villarreal; Tammara (Keith) Kizziar; Shannon (George) Scott; step-daughter Gloria Ragan, all of Porterville, and step-son Jerry (Michelle) Loflin of Dallas, Oregon; 12 beautiful grandchildren; and brother, Lee Akins of Visalia.
Jim served our country 33 years with the Coast Guard Reserves as a yeoman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel B. and Edna H. Akins.
Visitation will be held at Myers Chapel on Monday, June 21, 2010 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at Westfield Christian Church on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 10:00 AM. Interment to be at Woodville Cemetery.
