Susan Overholt Apilado of Porterville, passed away on August 4, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. She died peacefully, at home, with her husband beside her.
She was born to the late Richard and Marilyn Overholt January 21, 1953 in Porterville.
Susan was a member of the first graduating class of Monache High School. She received her B. A. degree from California State University, Fresno, majoring in communicative disorders and graduating Summa Cum Laude.
She met the love of her life, Benjamin Apilado, and the two were together for thirty-one years.
Susan was a special education teacher, specializing in the deaf and hard of hearing. She began her teaching career in 1976 and taught in various schools throughout Tulare County. Before retiring in 2008, she was a Resource Specialist to Alta Vista, Rockford, and Hope Elementary Schools. Susan was a very dedicated professional who enjoyed teaching and interacting with her colleagues.
While growing up on a farm, Susan was a member of 4-H Club and various school bands. She was a song leader at Monache and active in numerous school organizations.
Ben and Sue loved to travel and took many cruises and trips abroad, visiting various countries in Europe and Asia, including their latest trip to China.
Susan had a zest for life and, as such, had many interests and hobbies. Some of them included sewing, macramé, stained glass work, playing cards and enjoying wine tasting with her husband. She had a life-long love of dogs, especially Schnauzers, which she bred and raised.
Susan is survived by her husband, Benjamin Apilado, her brothers Richard Overholt (wife Sandy), Michael Overholt and Randy Overholt, all of Porterville.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 11 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Myers Chapel. Services will be held on Friday, August 12 at 10:00 AM at Myers Chapel, with interment following at Woodville Cemetery.
